Policy Analysis Artisanal Diamond Cooperatives in Sierra Leone: Success or Failure?   Jun 2008
Source: Diamond Development Initiative // Partnership Africa Canada This policy brief examines artisanal diamond cooperatives in Sierra Leone, specifically the Integrated Diamond Management Program (IDMP) and its Peace Diamond Alliance (PDA). It provides an overview of the project and an assessment of its design problems, implementation factors, and internal factors. The brief concludes that the principal failings of the cooperatives were that they found very few diamonds, lost money, and suffered from corruption, but cautions that the PDA experience does not prove the cooperative model nonviable.
